Dune slope, not wind speed, best predicts bare sand in vegetated coastal dunes

Abstract Globally vegetation cover on coastal sand dunes has increased since at least the 1950s. With aim of restoring or increasing biodiversity, land managers in several countries have removed and/or reprofiled dune slopes to reinvigorate geomorphic activity. However, longevity these interventions can be relatively short (on order 5 10 years), and further active management is required. Hypotheses for controls activity frequently suggested that wind speedis most important controlling factor. Here we show slope best predictor bare four predominantly vegetated England Wales. We suggest steep maintained by three factors: (1) Wind erosion, due topographic acceleration (2) Granular avalanches unconsolidated sediment (3) Rotational slumping unstable slopes. Our results indicate where wish ‘rejuvenate’ areas sand, efforts should focus windward reprofiling mimic concave profiles faces parabolic with an overall angle between 18° 23° from toe crest.
